Literacy

We inspire our children to enjoy books and poems by bringing them to life through Story Sacks, puppet shows, songs and rhymes. Our children, of all ages, relish our Circle Time activities when we sing, do actions to the songs including learning about the world around them.

At Shannon ChildCare, we use Phonics Phase 1; we introduce letter sounds from an early age. Our toddlers and pre-schoolers enjoy clapping along to the syllables, aiding them to gain the concept of grouping sounds.

We use a multi-sensory approach; each letter sound is introduced with fun actions, stories and songs including alliterations. With early alphabet and phonic recognition, and our enjoyable reading systems, our children start to blend the letters, ready for learning how to read and spell.

‘Picture Reading’ is a wonderful way to engage children with books. This format encourages their language skills and extends their learning by introducing new words. Soon our children start making up stories through ‘Picture Reading’, which fosters their imagination and creativity.

Shannon ChildCare have a library system for our pre-schoolers; they love choosing a new book to take home for the week. We have little tricks that we share with our parents on how to ‘Bring Books to Life’. This attracts our children to have a love of books, learning to handle them carefully and enjoy the experience of reading stories with their parents and care
